ConservationVice-Chair, Conservation: Peter O'Shea, 315-848-2178 Many people first become acquainted with the Adirondacks in search of recreation. The lakes, streams, mountains and valleys offer a wide variety of opportunities in an area of outstanding natural beauty. As we canoe, hike or ski, our understanding of this special place and its fragility deepens. The Adirondack Mountain Club is dedicated to responsible recreation use of the New York State Forest Preserve and other lands and waters and is committed to the use of advocacy, education, and conservation to protect these natural resources. Laurentians, individually and through the chapter, support this mission through their participation in a wide range of activities and through chapter policies and programs. The Laurentian Chapter is actively involved in the maintenance of the Stone Valley and Red Sandstone trails; two trails we have developed. Its support of the Kids on the Trail Challenge, the high school trail program and the summer youth camp program is intended to build awareness of the responsible use and protection of natural resource. Through leadership and participation in local, regional and statewide committees and conservation activities, members provide service and responsible stewardship. We also provide news of actions that have the potential to impact the natural resources in our region. Over the years, Chapter members have attended Department of Environmental Conservation hearings to share their perspectives on concerns that range from land use classification to waterway regulation. Members have also responded by writing to politicians and public agencies to air their views on these issues. For a quick overview of ADK’s positions on current conservation and advocacy issues, visit the ADK conservation page. Please contact Peter O'Shea (315-848-2178) if you would like to become involved. |
