Announcing the 4th Annual Laurentian Chapter Photo Contest

We are pleased to announce the fourth annual ADK Laurentian Chapter Photo Contest. The contest is open to members of the Adirondack Mountain Club, who may submit photos taken anywhere during the contest period; and to non-member participants on Laurentian Chapter outings, who may submit photos taken during those outings during the contest period. Photographs taken in the period October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012 are eligible. All trip photos used in Laurentian Chapter publicity during the contest will be entered automatically. Entrants must allow the photos to be used in chapter publicity.

The criteria are: technical quality; artistic expression; and extent to which the photo conveys the Chapter’s goals of conservation, education, and responsible outdoor recreation. Winning and featured photographs from previous contests can be found on the following pages:

Prizes will be awarded at the Laurentian Chapter Annual Meeting in November, 2012. For ease of handling, digital photos are preferred, but hardcopy versions are acceptable. If your photos are originally digital, please submit the highest resolution you have. If they are originally film and you have a scanned version, you may submit the latter with the possibility of using negatives for final printing.

The judges of the recently completed 3rd Annual Competition asked to

“Please give our collective thanks to all the photographers for their entries and encourage them to enter next year’s contest, as the overall quality was very good.” They suggest the following tips for improving the quality of contest submissions:

  • Small file size should be avoided (files sizes of at least 500 kbytes are best)
  • Group shots should avoid people “cut off at the knees.”
  • Avoid having shadows on your subjects, such as from hat brims, particularly in group shots
  • For best results, contest submissions should not include added text on the photos
